The Harvey Milk School: A Public High School for LGBTQ Youth
Monday August 18, 2003

The first thought that enters my mind after a 13 year old kid tells me he's already come out is "How does he do it? Kids are so cruel, especially if you're 'different'!" Despite these challenges, kids seem to be coming out at earlier ages facing harassment and violence from their peers. Alarming statistics from the Sexual Information and Education Council of the United States show that 69% of LGBTQ youth reported experiencing some form of harassment or violence while in school.
In an effort to support and develop the LGBTQ community, The Hetrick-Martin Institute established The Harvey Milk School in New York City for LGBTQ youth. The school received nation attention this summer when they became a 4-year accredited high school.
